Episode 19 - Power of Small Teams
Small teams – handicap or super power?
A small team can be more of a superpower – but only if you build it that way.
We talk about how you can put your small team on the path to being as good as or better than a large team with more resources.
Notes:
Be sure to check out EP05 - MATURE ACTUALLY as we reference it in this discussion.
Greener Grass effect – Own where you are
Love to wallow in the thought “If only we had more team members or a bigger budget”
Big team comes with big team problems like orchestrating change across more teams, additional bureaucracy, slower innovation
Seen small teams learn something on a Thursday and by the next Tuesday they were testing
Master your tools – Own what you have
A small team means your identity is closer to capability rather than locked into a job description or specific tool
Take advantage of the freedom by learning as many tools as possible
Start with the main technologies, EDR and network, but continue to push into email, Active Directory, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), identity tools, etc.
Scripting is your extra team member(or 3!) – Own where you are going
If you do anything weekly or more often, script it
Most tools allow programmatic access, pick your main tool and begin learning how to interact with it from a script
Python and PowerShell are great starts, then learn how to interact with API’s
